VERBENA OFFICINALIS

BOTANICAL NAME:  Verbena officinalis Linn.

FAMILY:  Verbenaceae

COMMON NAMES:  English: Vervain.

DESCRIPTION:  An erect or decumbent perennial with deep woody fusiform root stock up to 1.5 cm in height. Leaves opposite or terrate, oblong or ovate, coarsely toothed, pinnatified or variously lobed, lobes acute or obtuse. Flowers lilac, in dense, elongated spikes.

DISTRIBUTION: Found throughout India.

PART USED:  Whole plant

HOMOEOPATHIC USES

NERVOUS SYSTEM:  Nervous depression, weakness and irritation and spasms. Epilepsy, insomnia, mental exhaustion. In epilepsy, it brightens up the patient’s mental powers and helps the constipation.

SKIN: Promotes the absorption of blood and allays pain in bruises. Vesicular erysipelas. One of the remedies for Poison-oak.

POTENCY:  Mother tincture.
