MOMORDICA CHARATIA

BOTANICAL NAME—Momordica charantia

FAMILY—Cucurbitaceae

COMMON NAMES—English—Bitter gourd; Hindi-Karela ; Malayalam-Paval; Tamil-Pavakka-chedi; Telegu—Kakara.

DESCRIPTION—A climbing plant with more or less hairy stem. Leaves are 5 lobed, toothed, more or less villous on the underside. Pale middle sized flowers appear in May to August.  Fruit is oblong or ovate, more or less tubercle and dentate. There are two verities , one with a small rounded fruit and the other lomger and more cucumber-like.

DISTRIBUTION—Cultivated throughout India and also grows wild.

PART USED—The fresh ripe  fruit.

HOMOEOPATHIC USES

FEVER—High temperature due to undeveloped small pox or measles. It helps the appearance of eruptions.

DIARRHEA—Cholera like symptoms. Abdomen seems full of fluid discharged explosively , which is thin, watery and yellow. Cramps, great thirst and prostration.

COUGH—Watery discharge from eyes and nose with cough and nausea.

COLIC—Gall bladder symptoms. Colicky pains, starting from back, spreading over abdomen.

POTENCY—Mother tincture
