JAUNDICE BERRY - HEALTH BENEFITS


Jaundice berry botanically known as Berberis vulgaris L.  belongs to family berberidacea, It is native to central and north Europe . Also found in northwest and western Asia , Its Indian name is Ambarberis. The bark of this plant contains many active alkaloids such as berberine, oxycanthine, columbamine, which  are all antibacterial . Tannin , resin, fat, and starch are other constituents of the herb.
MEDICINAL USES   
Liver disorders- Jaundice berry is particularly useful as a bitter tonic in jaundice and other liver diseases. The pulverized bark is given several times a day in little doses. Alternately the fluid extract can also be given.
High blood pressure- The herb is highly beneficial  in the treatment of high blood pressure. Medically it has been examined that it dilates the arteries thereby lowering blood pressure
Woman diseases- The herb is useful in menstrual disorders such as painful periods and excessive loss of blood . It has been found beneficial during child labor.
Purgative- Jaundice berry act as an effective purgative when taken in large doses of more than one fourth of a teaspoon of pulverized bark or 5 gm doses of the fluid extract
Kidney stone-The herb is highly effective in the treatment of renal calculus. It also prevent the formation of renal stones. Give 10 drops tincture 4 times daily
Lumbago- it is highly effective for lumbago with kidney stone. Give 10 drops tincture 4 times daily
Scurvy – A decoction of the leaves as well as juice of the bery can be given with beneficial results in scurvy
Precautions- The herb should not be given during pregnancy as the alkaloid peregrine stimulates the uterus and may cause abortion.
