SPONGIA TOSTA

ZOOLOGICAL NAME:  Sycon gelatinosum Blainville.

CLASS:  Porifera

COMMON NAMES: Roasted sponge.

DESCRIPTION:  The horny skeleton   from which the desired substance is prepared consists mainly of siliceous or calcareous matter, while the spongy portion is soft, elastic and compressible and traversed by many lacunae, with circular openings on the surface. Bleached sponges are not suitable for medicinal purposes, and those selected pieces are roasted until brown and friable.

DISTRIBUTION:  The Mediterranean, near Syria and Greece.

PART USED:  Whole animal

HOMOEOPATHIC USES

CROUP: Respiration is short and  difficult with sensation as if the larynx is plugged. Cough with a sound as if wood is being cut with a saw. Croup worse during inspiration and before midnight.

COUGH: Great dryness of the air passages. Cough dry and barking. Cough with a sound as if a wood was being sawed. Cough starts after eating or drinking, especially warm drinks.

ANGINA PECTORIS: Awakened suddenly after midnight with pain and suffocation. Rapid and violent palpitations with dyspnoea, cannot lie down,  also feels best resting in horizontal position .Anxiety and fear of death.  It is a remedy for valvular diseases of heart.

GOITRE: Goiter with suffocative spells, worse touching neck or pressure or pains with heart. Swallows water in small quantity and with difficulty . Numb externally. Thyroid gland swollen, even with the chin. Great hunger.

EPIDIDYMITIS: Swelling of spermatic cord and testicles with pain and tenderness.

LYMPH GLANDS: Swelling and indurations of lymph glands. Cervical glands swollen with tensive pain on turning head, painful on pressure.

POTENCY:  2X or Mother tincture to 3rd potency.
