BOTANICAL NAME:  Ustillago maydis DC

FAMILY:  Ustilaginaceae

COMMON NAMES:  English:  Maize smut, Corn smut.

DESCRIPTION:  A fungus, growing on the stems, grains and Indian corn in masses, varying in size from a cherry to that of a child’s head, smooth, spherical or lobed, of a bluish tinge becoming blackish, composed of innumerable minute globular spores covered with small processes. It has a peculiar, heavy, unpleasant smell.

DISTRIBUTION:  Tropical parts of India.

PART USED:  Fungus

HOMOEOPATHIC USES

UTERUS: Uterine fibroids, bleeding. Vicarious menstruation. Hypertrophy of uterus. Cervix spongy, easily bleeding. Menses half liquid, half clotted, bright red, worse slightest provation. Profuse menses after miscarriage. Menorrhagia at menopause. Foul, yellow or brown leucorrhea. Bearing down pains when child nurses. Acute ovarian pain, worse left.

POTENCY:  Mother tincture to third potency.
