BOTANICAL NMANE:  Berberis vulgaris Linn.
FAMILY:  Berberidaceae
COMMON NMAES:  English-Barberry; Hindi-Kashmal.
DESCRIPTION:  A deciduous shrub having roots of pale yellow color, having thorny, angular branches. Leaves in tufts , somewhat ovate, more or less pointed, serrated and fringed, and with three cleft spreading, sharp thorns at the base of each leaf bud. Flowers in drooping , ,any flowered racemes, golden yellow with red glands. Fruit a scarlet berry.
DISTRIBUTION:  India, Europe, and North of Asia.
PART USED:  Bark of the root.
HOMOEOPATHIC USES
RENAL COLIC:  Renal colic from stones. Violent stitching  pain from left side and extends from kidney to bladder and urethra. Stitching pain in front of kidneys extending to liver, spleen, stomach and groins. Pain with constant urging to urinate.  Renal colic with backache.  Bubbling sensation in region of kidneys. Pain in the thighs and loins on urinating. Pain worse from motion, standing, jarring, stepping hard etc.  Urine with thick mucus and bright red, turbis, yellow, mealy, sandy or slimy sediment.
GALL STONE COLIC:  Gall stone colic arresting breathing. Colic from gall bladder to stomach, worse pressure. Torn loose feeling in the epigastrium.
VAGINISMUS:  Vagina sensitive, vaginismus. Pinching constriction in mons veneris, contraction and  tenderness of vagina. Cutting pain after sex. Enjoyment absent during sex. Prostration after sex.
POTENCY:  Mother tincture to 6th potency
